You can play with a MIDI keyboard, your computer keyboard, the mouse or a touch screen. Pick your instrument from Sounds.
MIDI keyboards
Any MIDI keyboard the browser can see will work, and you get real dynamics from the keys. Plug it in and pick it in MIDI›Input, and the site remembers it for next time. This works in Chrome and Edge but not Safari.
A sustain pedal plugged into the keyboard works too. The Output list goes the other way and sends what's played in the room out to another MIDI device or program.
Typing keys
Your computer keyboard works as a piano, with the Virtual Piano layout on by default. The full maps are on Typing keys.
Velocity
Velocity is how hard a note is played. A MIDI keyboard sends it on its own, and if your playing comes out too quiet or too loud you can set Settings›Velocity curve to Harder or Softer.
Typing keys can't tell how hard you pressed, so they all play at whatever Velocity on the stage is set to.
Transpose
Transpose shifts your keys up or down by semitones, up to two octaves either way. You can keep playing the same shapes when a room's in an awkward key.
Sustain
Sustain keeps notes ringing after you let go, the same as the pedal on a real piano. Use Sustain on the stage or a pedal on your MIDI keyboard.
Key switch
If your instrument has more than one variant, Key switch on the stage puts each variant on a white key near the bottom of the keyboard. You can then jump between Staccato and Sustain in the middle of playing instead of going back to Sounds.
Clips
A room is always keeping the last few minutes of everything played in it, so if something good happens you can press Clip afterwards and save it. You don't need to start recording ahead of time. You need an Account for this.
Your clips are in Clips, where you can rename, play, download or delete them. Playing one takes you to Play Alone and plays it back on the stage with everyone's sounds, but only you can hear it.
The download is a MIDI file with one track per sound, so you can bring it into Studio and turn a jam into a song.
Stage
The stage is the main screen you see in a room, with the seat cards, the chat, your controls and the keyboard along the bottom.
Seat cards
Each seated player gets a card in their color showing their name, their sound and the chord they're playing. Cards glow when the player plays.
Click a card or a name to open the Player menu, where you can rate them, see their profile, send a friend request, change how loud they are, or mute their notes or chat.
Applaud everyone sends claps to the whole room.
3D view
Turn on 3D to watch everyone play their instruments around a grand piano instead of looking at a flat keyboard, and Keyboard keeps the flat keys underneath if you want both. This only changes what you see, so turn it off if your computer struggles with it.
Chat
Press to search for a gif, and picking one sends it right away.
Settings
These are all in Settings. They follow your account, so they'll be the same on another device.
