The piano roll is the grid where you write the notes for a Track. Time goes left to right and pitch goes up, across all 88 keys. The piano keys down the left side play when you click them.
Tools
| Tool | Key | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Draw | P | Press to place a note and drag right to set its length |
| Paint | B | Drag to lay down a run of notes |
| Select | E | Drag a box around notes |
Right-click deletes a note, and right-dragging deletes everything you pass over. You can hold Ctrl with any tool to get a selection box.
Notes
Drag either end of a note to change its length. New notes copy the velocity of the last note you placed or changed.
Shift+click adds to your selection. When you have two or more selected, a handle appears at the right edge that stretches them in time.
When you paste, the notes move along a beat at a time until they aren't sitting on top of the ones you copied, so pasting a few times in a row builds up a repeating pattern.
Snap
Snap sets the grid your notes land on. The fractions are fractions of a beat, not of a bar, so 1/4 here is what a lot of other sequencers call sixteenth notes.
| Snap | Length |
|---|---|
| Bar, Beat | One bar, one beat |
| 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 | That fraction of a beat (1/4 is the default) |
| 1/3, 1/6 | Triplets |
| None | No grid |
If you only need to place one note off the grid, hold Alt rather than changing the snap.
Quantize
Quantize (Ctrl+Q) pulls the selected notes onto the current snap, which you'll mostly use after Recording.
Velocity
The lane under the roll shows a stem for each note, and the height of the stem is how hard it plays. With Draw, dragging changes the nearest stem. With Select and several notes selected, dragging moves them all by the same amount. Right-drag draws a straight line across notes.
Volume automation
Volume on the same lane lets a track's volume change over the song, for things like fades and swells. Click to add a point and drag to move it, or use Paint to draw freehand. Right-drag draws a straight ramp, and double-clicking a point removes it. It works on top of the track's volume slider, so you can still turn the whole track up or down afterwards.
Ghost notes
More options›Ghost notes shows your other tracks' notes in grey behind the one you're editing. You can't edit them from there.
